Is John Toshack sending his resume out?
With John Toshack’s contract expiring at the end of the World Cup qualifying run, he sounds interested in returning to the club side. In a BBC interview when asked if he would rule out returning to management of a club the fifty-nine year-old Welsh leader responded:
“Certainly not. People say this will probably be my last job but I’m not so sure. I miss the week-to-week games [of club football] – it’s a different job. I’ve still got a year left on my contract, lots of things can happen in that time. You never know. I enjoy my football – it’s the only thing I’ve known since I made my debut for Cardiff 45 years ago. A lot of managers say ‘I don’t want to be doing this when I’m 50, then 55 and 60′ and they’re still carrying on when they’re 64 or 65 so you never know. I certainly don’t intend to be finished in football or retire.”
Of Wales tremendous group of younger players he adds:
“Whoever comes in, they can’t buy or sell anyone but there’s a very good nucleus of young players.
There are five or six players hitting the stage at between 28 and 32, when they should have their best years of international level, who should be able to help the young players coming through.”
In response to his original goal of qualifying for the Euro 2008 or 2010 World Cup he said:
“This one might be a little bit too soon, particularly taking into account the strength of the Germans and Russians. I think from 2009 and 2010 onwards, for seven years it’s a really bright future for the Welsh national team. Hopefully someone will benefit from the work that myself and Brian Flynn have put in over the past few years.”
